Pastor Victor Kanyari has once again found himself in the public spotlight, this time over the future of his two children with the late gospel singer Betty Bayo. Days after an audio recording leaked online—where he appeared to accuse Bayo’s husband, Hiram “Tash” Gitau, of seeking full custody—the preacher has now softened his tone, revealing that he has allowed Tash to continue staying with the children.
Addressing his congregation during a Sunday service in Nairobi on November 23, Kanyari spoke openly about the emotional conversations that followed Bayo’s death. He said he understood that Tash was grieving deeply and that having the children close might offer him comfort as he copes with the loss of his wife.
Kanyari explained that the issue was not worth turning into a confrontation, noting that he preferred to choose peace. He shared that he had spoken privately with Tash after the burial, and each time the subject of the children arose, Tash would ask who was supposed to stay with them. In response, Kanyari said he told him to take care of them for now, insisting that he did not want to create unnecessary scenes or trigger conflict during a period meant to honour Bayo’s memory.
He emphasised that his intention was to remain calm, responsible, and focused on avoiding a public custody battle.
His remarks quickly ignited debate online. Many social media users praised what they interpreted as a mature and compassionate decision, especially during a time of mourning. Others questioned why the pastor had chosen to discuss the matter during a church service, pointing out that Tash himself had remained silent and dignified throughout the unfolding drama.
Some commenters encouraged both men to keep their discussions private and prioritise the children’s emotional stability as both families continue to heal.
During the same service, Kanyari also reflected on his past with Bayo. He recounted how they first met when she performed at his church, how their friendship blossomed, and how their relationship later evolved. Speaking with visible emotion, he described her as a remarkable woman, even though their marriage eventually collapsed after a widely publicised scandal that strained their union.
Earlier, Kanyari had shared a video showing bundles of cash he claimed were condolence gifts from friends and colleagues. The clip attracted mixed reactions—some viewed it as a generous show of support, while others felt the public display was unnecessary.
For now, the preacher says his attention is on doing what he believes is best for the children and maintaining peace as both families continue to navigate their grief and rebuild their lives.
