Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan has once again demonstrated her compassionate leadership after issuing a firm directive for the release of all individuals arrested during the recent demonstrations. Speaking with authority and motherly empathy, she declared:
“Kama mama, naamuru vyombo vyote vya usalama viwaachilie wale wote waliokamatwa wakiandamana.”
Her statement, which translates to “As a mother, I order all security agencies to release everyone who was arrested while protesting,” has sparked widespread debate and admiration across the country.
President Samia emphasized that while the nation must respect law and order, it is equally important to understand the emotions, frustrations, and aspirations that drive young people to the streets. She noted that harsh punishment is not always the solution, adding that healing and unity should guide Tanzania’s way forward.
Her directive is being viewed as an act of national reconciliation, especially after tensions rose during the protests that saw a significant number of youths detained. Many citizens and leaders lauded her approach, describing it as a rare blend of firmness and compassion — leadership with both heart and authority.
Others argued that the move highlights deeper issues that the government must continue addressing, particularly the concerns raised by the protesters. Nonetheless, President Samia’s message was clear: Tanzania must choose peace over conflict and understanding over confrontation.
With this bold command, she positioned herself not just as the country’s leader, but as a mother advocating for harmony in her national family.
