Big win for Babu Owino as ODM Party leader Oburu Odinga say they will not endorse Sakaja

Embakasi East MP Babu Owino has received a major political boost after Siaya Senator and ODM Party leader Oburu Odinga declared that the party will not endorse Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja in the upcoming elections.

Speaking during a public function, Oburu stated that the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) would back one of its own for the Nairobi gubernatorial seat, signaling a shift in the capital’s political dynamics.

“As a party, we have made it clear that we will not endorse Governor Sakaja. We have capable leaders within ODM who can lead Nairobi effectively,” Oburu said, a statement that was widely interpreted as an indirect endorsement of Babu Owino.

Babu Owino, who has consistently positioned himself as a defender of youth empowerment and good governance, welcomed the announcement, terming it a “victory for party loyalty and service delivery.” The youthful legislator has in recent months intensified his grassroots mobilization in Nairobi, sparking speculation about his 2027 gubernatorial ambitions.

Political analysts view Oburu’s remarks as a turning point that could reshape Nairobi’s political contest. The move also reflects growing pressure within ODM to reward loyal members who have stood by the party through difficult political seasons.

Governor Sakaja, who has been perceived as politically close to President William Ruto, may now face a tougher battle to retain the seat if ODM fields a strong candidate like Babu Owino.

As the 2027 elections draw nearer, the latest pronouncement by Oburu Odinga is likely to set the stage for intense political competition in Nairobi, with ODM preparing to reclaim control of the capital.
