What Slain Rongo University Student Had Promised Mother On Phone Before Commiting Suicide

The family of Violet Nyabicha, a Rongo University student who died under unclear circumstances, is mourning the painful loss of their first-born daughter.

Speaking from their home in Montonto, Bomachoge, Kisii County, Violet’s mother recounted the heartbreaking last moments before her daughter’s untimely death. On that fateful day, Violet had called her requesting money to buy sugar, saying she had no food to eat.

The mother promised to send her Sh350 via M-Pesa before heading to Daraja Mbili market. She described Violet as a loving and selfless daughter who always cared deeply for her family.

“She once told me that once she received her HELB savings, she would buy a young cow to support us back home. That dream now remains unfulfilled,” her mother said tearfully.

After sending the money, the family retired for the night, unaware of the tragedy that awaited. Around midnight, Violet’s mother received a strange call from an unknown number asking whether she knew Violet. Minutes later, another caller informed her that her daughter had suddenly fallen ill and was being rushed to hospital.

Before she could process the news, another devastating call came through — Violet had passed away.

The family rushed to Rongo, only to find a large crowd of students gathered at her residence, confirming their worst fears.

Violet is remembered as a caring, responsible young woman who had big dreams not only for herself but also for her siblings and parents. Her sudden death has left her family devastated and searching for answers as investigations into the cause continue.
