My name is Patrick, and I come from Mbale, a busy town in Eastern Uganda. For most of my childhood, life was very hard. I grew up on the streets after losing both of my parents at a young age. I had no place to call home, and I survived by begging for food and sleeping on shop verandas. Many nights I went hungry, and many days I wished my life would change. Whenever I saw other children going to school or families enjoying their meals together, I felt broken inside. I believed poverty was my destiny, and I thought I would die on the streets.
Even after I became a young man, nothing changed. I tried doing small jobs like carrying luggage in markets and cleaning shops, but the money was never enough. Sometimes I would work the whole day and still go to sleep hungry. People insulted me, and many laughed at my situation.
