A dormitory at St. Michael’s Primary School in Kirinyaga County was reduced to ashes after a raging fire broke out on Sunday night, leaving the institution counting heavy losses. The incident, which occurred while learners were away for evening studies, spared lives but destroyed property worth hundreds of thousands of shillings.
Witnesses say the blaze spread quickly, fueled by mattresses, bedding, and wooden structures inside the dormitory. Despite frantic efforts by teachers, parents, and neighbors to put out the fire, little could be salvaged before firefighters arrived. By the time the flames were extinguished, the entire dormitory had been consumed, leaving pupils stranded and deeply shaken.
School officials confirmed that no student was injured in the tragedy, as most were attending evening prep sessions when the fire started. However, pupils lost personal belongings including uniforms, books, and bedding. Parents who rushed to the scene expressed relief that no life was lost, but also frustration over the heavy losses incurred.
The cause of the fire remains unclear, though initial reports suggest it could have been triggered by an electrical fault. Authorities have since launched investigations to establish the exact cause and to ensure safety measures are reinforced to prevent future incidents.
Kirinyaga leaders and education officials have urged quick support for the affected learners, calling on well-wishers and the national government to step in with emergency aid such as bedding, uniforms, and learning materials.
For the pupils of St. Michael’s, the incident was a harsh reminder of the vulnerabilities many schools face, particularly in boarding facilities where fire safety standards are often overlooked. Even as reconstruction plans are considered, the priority now is restoring hope and ensuring the learners can continue their studies without further disruption.
