Waithaka Wa Jane, popularly known as the “Karaiku Master,” has quickly risen to become one of the most celebrated Mugithi artists in Kenya. His unique Kikuyu music style has won the hearts of many, making him a strong rival to established stars like Samidoh.
Born John Waithaka Mwangi in Mathioya, Murang’a County, the mid-20s musician grew up in a family of eight children—six boys and two girls. Although he dropped out of school in Form Three, Waithaka’s passion for music pushed him to start as a drummer before learning to play the guitar, a skill he perfected through dedication and mentorship from Pato wa Gathoni. Inspired by the legendary Salim Junior, Waithaka has mastered the Kikuyu traditional singing style Ngogoyo, blending it with his powerful voice and guitar strings to become one of the most sought-after Mugithi performers in hotels, clubs, and live shows.
Despite his massive success, Waithaka remains humble and respectful. He insists he is not in competition with anyone, attributing his fame to hard work and God’s grace. Currently booked months in advance, he commands a huge following on social media, with over 82,000 YouTube subscribers and nearly 10 million views. Some of his hit songs include Wangeci Mwana Ni Ekumosaa, Niki Giki Waheire, Wandigiire Mwana Ukihika, and Mwendwa Ng’endo. While acknowledging Samidoh’s international fame, Waithaka is grateful for his own journey, proving that with talent, determination, and humility, one can rise from humble beginnings to greatness.
