The Court of Appeal has blocked Nairobi County Deputy Governor, Anne Kananu from assuming the office of the Governor.
Kenyan activist, Okiya Omtatah speaking to a local daily, revealed that the court stopped Kananu from being sworn in so as to give the court enough time to determine another suit.
“(I filed the petition) to allow the Court of Appeal determine a pending appeal without the matter being overtaken by events,” explained Omtatah.
Judges Jessie Lessit, Justice Jamila Mohammed andd Wanjiru Karanja, making the ruling said that the order will remain active till 22 October, 2021.
The Deputy Governor was sworn in in January but lawyers rushed to court claiming that the exercise was unlawful.
“We have secured a significant victory with the high court temporarily stopping the swearing-in & assumption of office of Anne Kananu pending the hearing of a petition filed by the KHRC & LSK.”
The court has just blocked the attempt at illegal subversion of our constitution,” noted KHRC at the time.
Notably, Anne Kananu has expressed her interest in the Nairobi Gubernatorial seat in 2022.
