The aftermath of the Shakahola tragedy has prompted the government to intensify its crackdown on religious leaders across the country. The latest figure to come under scrutiny is a self-proclaimed preacher, Jesus Eliud Wekesa, also known as Yesu Wa Tongaren, who has presented himself to the police for questioning in response to allegations of cultic practices among his followers.
Speaking to journalists outside the police station in Bungoma, Wekesa asserted his innocence, stating that he has been involved in the work of God for over 12 years and has never committed any wrongdoing. He also mentioned that he did not require a lawyer, claiming that the sun and the moon would act as his advocates.
However, a police officer at the station revealed that Wekesa’s followers would not be allowed to accompany him during the interrogation. The officer emphasized that the preacher had been summoned alone and that there was no need to involve the group that accompanied him.
The officer also confirmed that no charges had been filed against Wekesa yet, and that the police would make a decision on the matter after the interrogation.
