Police in Nyeri County are investigating a road accident that occurred in Tetu Constituency, where a public service vehicle overturned, resulting in the death of one person. Two others were seriously injured, while several more sustained minor injuries.
According to reports, the vehicle had earlier been spotted being driven recklessly along the Nairobi-Thika Highway. Witnesses say it appeared unstable as it made its way toward Nyeri, and videos capturing the incident were widely shared on social media on Sunday afternoon.
Authorities revealed that they became aware of the situation through the viral footage, and efforts to trace the vehicle and its driver had already begun before the accident happened.
The vehicle, which has a capacity of 33 passengers, is said to be owned by Expresso SACCO based in Mwiki. Police have identified the driver as Nicolas Mutwiri, who remains at large. Investigations are ongoing, and authorities are working closely with the SACCO as part of the probe.
Unofficial reports indicate there may be attempts to interfere with the investigation, but police say they are determined to bring the driver to justice.
