On Tuesday, Senate Speaker Amason Kingi announced the impeachment of Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza after the Senate voted in favor of her removal from office. Governor Mwangaza was found guilty of three charges: gross violation of the Constitution, gross misconduct, and abuse of office.
The Senate’s decision followed a series of impeachment hearings where Governor Mwangaza strongly denied the accusations against her. The county assembly had charged her with various offenses, including the illegal revocation of appointments, failure to appoint board members, and the dismissal of county officials without proper procedures.
As a result of the impeachment, Governor Mwangaza’s term in office has officially ended, leading to widespread discussions and speculation about the future leadership of Meru County.
Senator Kinya declared that the impeachment would have been pursued repeatedly if necessary, emphasizing the importance of transparent and accountable governance that serves the people of Meru.
Several witnesses testified during the hearings, including Irene Kawira, widow of the late Meru blogger Daniel Muthiani (also known as Sniper), Linda Kiome, a former legal advisor to Governor Mwangaza, and Jacob Kirari, the Meru County Assembly Clerk.
A portion of Meru residents have expressed their approval of the Senate’s decision, celebrating the impeachment as a step towards better governance.
