Cabinet Secretary Eliud Owalo has stirred fresh political debate after praising President William Ruto’s development record and urging the Luo community to support the Head of State. Speaking during a public event, Owalo said President Ruto has rolled out significant development projects across the country, including in Luo Nyanza, and therefore deserves backing from all regions.
“Rais Ruto amefanya maendeleo mingi katika nchi yetu, na nikisema mweshimiwa rais anafaa kuungwa mkono na jamii ya Wajaluo nina hakika hiyo ndiyo njia safi,” Owalo stated. He added that ODM leader Raila Odinga himself had previously encouraged cooperation with the government, noting, “Mweshimiwa Raila hakuwa mjinga kutuambia sisi tufanye kazi na Ruto.”
The CS argued that development is not tied to political rivalry but to collaboration between communities and the national government. He said it was time for the Luo community to shift from opposition politics and take advantage of national opportunities by working closely with the President.
Owalo further emphasized that Ruto’s administration has shown commitment to transforming the region through improved infrastructure, youth programmes, and economic empowerment initiatives. According to him, ignoring such progress for the sake of political tradition would disadvantage the community.
His remarks have divided opinion. Supporters see Owalo’s call as a realistic, forward-looking approach that prioritizes development over politics. Critics, however, accuse him of attempting to erode Raila’s political base and normalize a new political alignment in Nyanza.
The debate comes at a time when alliances and loyalties continue to shift ahead of the 2027 elections, with leaders positioning themselves and their communities for strategic advantage.
