Whoever asserted that women cannot match men clearly never encountered Elizabeth Marami. Raised in Kenya’s coastal regions, Liz defied traditional gender roles and shattered expectations in a predominantly male domain, becoming Kenya’s first female Marine Pilot.
Originally intending to study Law at the University of Nairobi after completing her education at Mama Ngina Girls’ High School in Mombasa, Liz’s path took a different turn when she received a scholarship to study Navigation in Alexandria, Egypt.
Her journey in Alexandria wasn’t without challenges. As the only female and with her distinct skin color, Liz faced skepticism and marginalization from peers and instructors alike. Determined to prove herself, she persevered, excelling academically despite the initial dismissals and prejudices.
Upon completing her studies in 2013, Liz returned to Kenya, eager to gain practical experience in the marine industry to obtain her license. However, job opportunities were scarce for women, especially an African woman. Undeterred, she eventually secured a position as a marine pilot under senior supervision.
Realizing the importance of representation and advocacy, Liz founded ‘Women Going Against the Tied’, a digital platform amplifying stories of women defying odds globally. Her initiative garnered attention, leading to career opportunities abroad. Liz’s exemplary performance caught the eye of The Royal Caribbean Group, who offered her a senior role, propelling her to further success.
Driven by her ambition and resilience, Liz pursued advanced certifications at prestigious maritime institutions in the United Kingdom, ultimately achieving the rank of Chief Officer of Navigation. Currently on the verge of attaining the highest certification in her field, Liz’s journey underscores her unwavering determination and refusal to be defined by gender or race.
Through it all, Liz Marami embodies resilience and a relentless pursuit of her aspirations, proving that with dedication and courage, barriers can be overcome, and dreams can be realized.
