Police officers have launched an operation in Nairobi’s Central Business District (CBD), targeting matatus accused of blocking roads and causing traffic chaos.
During the crackdown, officers were seen removing and seizing registration plates from public service vehicles that had allegedly parked illegally or obstructed key roads within the city centre. The move is part of efforts to restore order and ease congestion in the busy CBD.
Authorities say some matatu operators have been ignoring designated stages and traffic regulations, leading to gridlock, delays for motorists, and inconvenience to pedestrians.
The operation has drawn mixed reactions from the public. While some city residents welcomed the move, saying indiscipline among some operators has worsened traffic congestion, others questioned whether the crackdown will offer a long-term solution to Nairobi’s transport challenges.
Police have warned that enforcement will continue, urging drivers to comply with traffic rules and operate only within designated areas.
