Evangelist Jacinta Nzilani Kilonzo is an unconventional religious leader, setting herself apart from her peers due to her identity as a lesbian. In contrast to many pastors who are either married, divorced, or single, Nzilani takes pride in her sexual orientation.
In a candid interview with a local radio station, the mother of three disclosed that her attraction to women became evident when she was just 16 years old. She emphasized that being a lesbian is not a choice but an intrinsic part of her identity. Originally aspiring to become a sister in the Catholic Church, Nzilani’s plans took an unexpected turn at the age of 18 when a priest in Machakos County made inappropriate advances, causing her discomfort.
Following this distressing encounter, Nzilani returned home, only to face ridicule and was eventually married off to a man close to her age. Despite the union resulting in three children, she admitted to never finding happiness in the marriage. Intimacy with her husband was a source of discomfort, describing it as forced, and she harbored resentment towards the experience.
Tragedy struck in 2008 when her husband succumbed to cancer after a 25-year marriage. The aftermath was challenging, with in-laws turning against her and even resorting to physical violence, blaming her for bringing a supposed curse to their family. During this trying period, Nzilani faced a dwindling congregation as most church members distanced themselves from her after her husband’s death.
Struggling through adversity, she initiated a program to connect with women and gain insight into their experiences. Although a subsequent relationship with a woman ended due to her partner’s bisexuality, Nzilani eventually found solace in her current partner, also an evangelist, whom she describes as mature and understanding.
Unfazed by societal norms, Nzilani boldly asserts that her same-sex relationship is in accordance with her faith, citing John 3:16 to emphasize God’s unconditional love for all, irrespective of sexual orientation. She openly shares her truth with her children, asserting that she was created this way.
Addressing the hypothetical scenario of her son revealing a gay orientation, Nzilani expresses a willingness to respect his decision, prioritizing his happiness. Her story challenges conventional expectations within religious circles, highlighting her resilience in the face of adversity and commitment to living authentically.
