A family in Makueni is grieving after a 20-month-old baby, Alexander Mutunga, lost his life following a police encounter that turned fatal.
According to his mother, Ziporah Mutheu, the incident began when she went to demand money owed to her. Instead, the trader reported her to the police, claiming she owed Ksh 10,000. Officers later stormed her home to arrest her.
Mutheu says she had her baby strapped on her back when the officers assaulted her. In the chaos, she collapsed, and her baby’s head struck a counter and wooden pallet. Hours later, the child died from internal bleeding while receiving treatment at Kambu Sub-County Hospital.

The grieving family is demanding justice, accusing the police of brutality and negligence. Despite several reports being made, no officer has been arrested.
The incident has sparked outrage in the community, with leaders and rights groups calling on IPOA to urgently investigate and hold the officers accountable.
For the heartbroken mother, the tragedy is unbearable. “I only wanted to collect what was mine, but I ended up losing my baby,” she said.
