A woman from Meru County, popularly known as Mama Mboga, has opened up about the terrifying experience she faced after an intimate video of hers went viral on social media, sparking outrage and nearly costing her life.
Speaking to local media, Mama Mboga said that after the video circulated online, close to 200 angry residents formed a mob outside her home, accusing her of bringing shame to the community. The crowd attempted to break into her compound and destroy her belongings, forcing her to flee in fear for her life.
“They surrounded my home, shouting and threatening to kill me. I was terrified,” she recounted, still shaken by the ordeal.
Her rescue came just in time, thanks to a young well-wisher identified as Wamuna Tabitha, who intervened and helped her escape from Meru moments before the mob could attack. Mama Mboga expressed deep gratitude to her rescuer, saying that without her timely help, she might not have survived.
She explained that the man involved in the video had taken advantage of her vulnerability. According to her, he had promised to offer financial support and help her find a husband, but instead exploited her trust — coercing her to share private content before leaking it online.
“I did it out of desperation to take care of my children and my late sister’s children,” she said. “I regret it deeply. I never meant to harm anyone.”
Now living away from Meru, Mama Mboga says she continues to struggle with emotional trauma, shame, and the burden of public judgment. As a grandmother and the sole provider for seven children, she says the experience has left her broken but determined to rebuild her life.
She has appealed to authorities and the public to help take down the video from online platforms, citing the immense psychological harm it has caused her and her family.
“I have learned a painful lesson,” she said. “I am asking the government to protect me and to take action against those who exploited and exposed me.”
Human rights advocates have since urged the government to act swiftly, emphasizing that victims of leaked private material deserve protection and justice rather than public humiliation.
The case highlights the growing dangers of online exploitation and cyber abuse, particularly for vulnerable individuals who are often manipulated under false promises. It also underscores the need for stronger digital privacy laws and community education on empathy and responsible online behavior.
Mama Mboga’s story serves as a powerful reminder that behind every viral scandal lies a human being — often hurt, betrayed, and in desperate need of compassion and protection.
