Nairobi County Environment Chief Officer Geoffrey Mosiria has issued a stern warning to Kenyans against consuming illicit alcohol after busting a woman selling chang’aa openly in Embakasi South.
The incident took place on Thursday, September 18, near the Taj Mall Roundabout. Mosiria, who was on his routine environmental inspection, was tipped off by a concerned resident about illegal brew being sold in the area.
When he arrived, he was shocked to find several intoxicated men surrounding a woman who was openly selling chang’aa. In a video he later shared online, the official confronted the woman, who at first denied the accusations before fleeing the scene.
One of the drunk men at the spot admitted to buying the brew, claiming he could not afford regular beer. He later tried to incite others to resist Mosiria’s attempt to destroy the illicit alcohol but was briefly handcuffed before being released.
Speaking to the gathered crowd, Mosiria warned residents against consuming chang’aa, saying it not only causes serious health problems but also ruins families and communities. He cautioned sellers against using poverty as an excuse to engage in harmful trade.
The Nairobi official has since called on police officers and relevant authorities to intensify crackdowns on illicit alcohol across the county, stressing that the fight is about both law enforcement and protecting public health.
