Mugithi artist Kareh B, also known as Mary Gioche, is demanding answers following the tragic passing of her 17-year-old son in a road accident on Monday evening.
Her son, Joseph Mwadulo, was one of the students from Chavakali Boys High School involved in the accident that evening. Tragically, Mwadulo was the sole fatality, while three others sustained severe injuries. The students were en route to Nairobi for the April school holiday.
Expressing her dismay, Kareh B disclosed that she had raised concerns about the school’s decision to release students at 11 pm. However, it seemed that the majority of parents were in agreement, leading to the journey proceeding as planned.
“I have been a parent at Chavakali Boys for the past four years, yet no one has reached out to inform me of my son’s passing or extend condolences. When can I expect to hear from you?” she questioned.
The students from Chavakali Boys High School were traveling on an Easy Coach bus, which operates along the Nairobi-Busia route.
While the cause of the accident remains unknown, Kareh B criticized Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen for what she perceives as a lack of diligence in enforcing traffic regulations.
“Education Minister, who authorized minors to travel at night? Transport and Roads Minister, was the entire traffic team asleep that minors went unnoticed traveling at night?” the musician queried.
She also expressed concern over the silence of government officials in response to recent accidents involving students.
“Will you continue to remain silent and lose more children on the roads? What measures are being implemented to address the recurring accidents, particularly involving the younger generation? I demand answers. Farewell, my son,” Kareh B added.
In response, Easy Coach stated that they would collaborate with authorities to determine the cause of the accident.
A search was launched immediately for the bus driver who reportedly fled the scene after the bus overturned at Coptic Roundabout in Kisumu.
Expressing deep regret, Easy Coach confirmed that the bus was transporting students from Chavakali High School. They reported that 22 students had been discharged from hospitals, while three remained hospitalized for further treatment.
“We are deeply saddened to confirm a fatal accident involving our Mbale-Nairobi bus that occurred in Mamboleo-Kisumu on April 1st, 2024, around 10 pm… Our heartfelt condolences go out to their family and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time,” the bus company said in a statement.
