Stephen Odhiambo, famously known as ‘Migori James Bond, has been sentenced to 18 months in prison for his reckless stunt of hanging onto a helicopter carrying YouTuber Oga Obinna during a wedding in Rapogi, Migori County. Odhiambo pleaded guilty to endangering the safety of the helicopter and its passengers through disorderly conduct.
The prosecution presented evidence, including witness testimonies from police officers and the pilot,and Senior Principal Magistrate Mathias Okuche handed down the sentence, citing the grave risk Odhiambo posed to himself and others. However, he was given an alternative option of a Ksh500,000 fine, but it remains unclear if he can raise the amount.
Investigation & Arrest:
Odhiambo was arrested on April 15 after evading police for nearly two weeks. Uriri OCPD Enrico Lyomu confirmed that he was caught sneaking back home at midnight and initially resisted arrest.
The pilot revealed that security had instructed people to stay 10 meters away from the chopper before takeoff. Despite warnings, Odhiambo forced his way onto the helicopter and clung to it as it ascended.
After the incident, Odhiambo was seen boasting to villagers, claiming he was ready to hang on “all the way to Nairobi.” The viral video sparked outrage and debates on public safety, leading to swift legal action.
The incident highlighted the dangers of reckless behavior around aircraft and the ruling sends a strong message against such stunts, which could inspire copycat acts.
Odhiambo will serve his sentence unless he pays the hefty fine. Meanwhile, authorities may tighten security around public events involving aircraft to prevent similar incidents.
