On Monday, August 19, 2024, senators convened for a closed-door session to address administrative matters in preparation for the upcoming impeachment hearing of Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza.
Senate Speaker Amason Kingi announced that media access to the chamber and gallery would be restricted during this preparatory session. “In accordance with tradition and the impeachment hearing schedule, the Senate will conduct a private session to discuss the management of the investigation,” Kingi stated.
He further clarified, “During this pre-hearing phase, all members of the public and media must vacate the chamber and galleries, and any broadcasting from the chamber will be immediately halted.”
The purpose of this preparatory session is to ensure that the impeachment process adheres to the County Governments Act and Senate Standing Orders. The Senate will reconvene for the open session at 11 a.m., where the Speaker will present the charges against Governor Mwangaza, who will then be required to enter a plea.
Additionally, during the open session, both the Meru County Assembly members and Governor Mwangaza will deliver their opening statements.
Governor Mwangaza faces accusations of serious constitutional violations, misconduct, and abuse of office.
