The saying, “When life presents you with lemons, make lemonade,” epitomizes the spirit of resilience and optimism. Janet Chepkoech, a resident of Kericho, embodies this mantra, having transformed personal challenges into an entrepreneurial triumph that now sustains her family.
Chepkoech’s journey began in humble circumstances. As the primary breadwinner and without formal employment, she turned to selling porridge to support her family. Her venture, modest at first, soon flourished as she gained a loyal customer base that included traders and government officials from Kericho County.
Her hard work paid off handsomely. Chepkoech revealed that she could earn up to Sh4,000 daily, amounting to over Sh100,000 per month by working six days a week. She explained, “On a good day, I sell 10 liters of porridge—5 liters of fermented and 5 liters of non-fermented. Each cup costs Sh20, and I sell more than 100 chapatis before mid-morning, making Sh4,000 a day.”
This steady income allowed her to save, participate in table banking initiatives, and provide for her family’s needs. Starting her day early, Chepkoech ensures her products are ready for delivery, a reflection of her commitment and discipline. Over the course of five years, her business has become a reliable source of income, with her primary goal being the education and well-being of her children.
Chepkoech attributes her success to several factors: maintaining high hygiene standards, building strong relationships with customers, and consistently meeting their expectations. “I prioritize cleanliness, respect my customers, and always ensure their needs are met,” she said. Feedback from satisfied patrons and open communication have further solidified her reputation.
However, the path to success was not without hurdles. The COVID-19 pandemic posed significant challenges, as government containment measures disrupted her operations. Yet, through resilience and adaptability, Chepkoech navigated the crisis and revived her business.
Her story is a powerful reminder that with determination and ingenuity, even the toughest challenges can be transformed into opportunities for growth and success.
