MC Gogo: How MC Rose From Doing Free Gigs to Charge Thousands for Hosting single Events

In a past interview, MC Gogo shared that he never imagined becoming an MC during his childhood. His journey into emceeing began unexpectedly when he was asked to step in as the host for a church event after the original MC fell ill. MC Gogo discovered a newfound passion for performing at that event.

“The event was a great success, and from that moment, I developed a passion for the microphone and saw it as a viable pursuit,” he said.

Motivated by his newfound enthusiasm, MC Gogo quickly began seeking emceeing opportunities on his own.

“I started looking for events in my local area and working with community organizations, even when they couldn’t offer payment, because it provided me with valuable exposure,” he explained.

However, the onset of COVID-19 in Kenya and the ensuing safety measures brought MC Gogo’s business activities to a standstill. In response, he and two DJ colleagues brainstormed ways to navigate the challenges posed by the pandemic while still earning an income. They approached a mutual acquaintance affiliated with a local organization with their idea.

“We decided to host live shows on Facebook and needed a venue for recording. He suggested we give it a shot on Friday. The response was remarkable, and that was the beginning of our shows,” he recalled.

Around the same time, MC Gogo considered creating a TikTok account, despite his previous reluctance.

“I had sworn never to join TikTok, as I thought it was mainly for women. However, when someone sent me a teaser of a mix we had made and claimed to have found it on TikTok, I decided to explore the platform,” he said.

While creating content for TikTok, MC Gogo listened to recordings of his live performances and chose short segments to share online. His first video went viral, catapulting him to instant fame.

“I checked my phone, and it was flooded with notifications. The video had over 20,000 views within an hour and a half. By two hours, it had reached 150,000 views. By the end of the day, it surpassed 1 million views. That’s when I started engaging with TikTok more regularly,” he noted.

MC Gogo also began collaborating with other DJs as a guest performer, leading to more emceeing opportunities. He mentioned that his parents fully support his career choice.

“My mother sees this as a legitimate profession. Personally, I don’t drink alcohol. I just create the atmosphere and go home. It’s just a job like any other,” he said.

He also emphasized his strong Christian faith, noting that he never misses church.

“Even if I have a show on Saturday, regardless of where it is outside Nairobi, I’m in church on Sunday. I also make sure never to miss my classes. I remember a time when my DJ friends found me studying in a club and laughed. I was preparing for an exam the next day,” he shared.

MC Gogo charges between Ksh 30,000 and Ksh 100,000 for his services.
