Former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i has criticized President William Ruto over the handling of Ugandan opposition figure Kizza Besigye.
Speaking during a public forum, Matiang’i reportedly described the alleged arrest and transfer of Besigye from Kenya as a move that could damage the country’s international reputation. In his remarks delivered in Kiswahili, he argued that detaining political opponents of neighboring governments while they are in Kenya undermines the country’s standing as a democratic state that respects political freedoms.
Matiang’i referenced a past instance involving former Tanzanian President John Magufuli, claiming that Kenya declined requests to detain Tanzanian opposition figures who had sought refuge in the country. He suggested that Kenya has historically maintained a position of neutrality and respect for political rights, and should continue to uphold that principle.
