Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST) has recently implemented a policy that prohibits students from wearing specific attire it deems as inappropriate. This new regulation includes the ban on plastic shoes, slippers, crocs, mini skirts, and tattered jeans, categorizing them as ‘indecent wear.’
The university administration has issued a directive advising students to adhere to a more modest dress code during their time at the institution. In a memo circulated internally, Bernardatte Abwao, the Dean of Students at MMUST, expressed concerns regarding the rising instances of students dressing inappropriately.
The memo acknowledges and appreciates those students who have consistently adhered to the university’s standards of decent dressing. However, it also addresses the issue of indecent attire, noting, “However, we have observed and noted with concern the indecent dressing by some of you.”
MMUST, located in Kakamega, has specifically prohibited the wearing of T-shirts with explicit or offensive content, crocs, slippers, and any form of plastic footwear. Dr. Abwao has explicitly stated that individuals donning mini skirts, skin-tight trousers, ripped or tattered jeans, low-cut blouses, and dresses will not be granted entry into the institution.
In addition to these regulations, the memo advises female students against wearing micro shorts, see-through clothing, outfits that reveal bra straps, and sleeveless T-shirts. Male students are also expected to comply with the dress code, and they are barred from wearing sagging trousers and attire that exposes their chests.
The administration has communicated that students are required to dress modestly in attire that is considered appropriate for an educational institution. This new policy aims to maintain a decorous and respectful environment within the university campus.
