‘Mali Safi Chito’ hitmaker ‘Millicent Jepkorir’ earns KSh100k in royalties from MCSK

Millicent Jepkorir, popularly known as Marakwet Daughter, emerged as one of the top beneficiaries of the substantial royalties disbursed by the Music Copyright Society of Kenya (MCSK). The distribution ceremony, which took place on Thursday, January 25, saw MCSK allocate KSh20 million in royalties to various Kenyan artists.

Marakwet Daughter, renowned for her hit single ‘Mali Safi Chito,’ was pleasantly surprised to receive over KSh100,000, an amount that exceeded her expectations. Ezekiel Mutua, the CEO of MCSK, commended Marakwet Daughter for her remarkable journey in the music industry.

Mutua highlighted the incredible transformation, recalling that the artist had once received a mere Ksh67 in royalties. He expressed admiration for Marakwet Daughter’s resilience and exclaimed, “MALI SAFI CHITO!!” in recognition of her accomplishments.

Another noteworthy recipient was rapper Sylvia Ssaru, who also received a substantial sum of over KSh100,000. Mutua, acknowledging Ssaru’s talent, not only praised her but also extended an offer to mentor her, putting an end to any previous conflicts.

This marked a significant change in attitude, as Mutua had criticized Ssaru in June of the previous year for her song “Kaskie Vibaya,” accusing her of promoting immorality. He questioned the impact of such lyrics on society and suggested that such choices could hinder artists from securing lucrative corporate deals.

However, during the recent event, Mutua praised Ssaru as the “next big thing” in the music industry and expressed his commitment to mentoring her. This positive turn of events indicated a resolution to their previous disagreements.

In response to Mutua’s past criticism, Ssaru defended her creative choices, urging him to explore her other songs, particularly highlighting her inspirational compositions. She emphasized that one person’s disapproval should not dictate her artistic expression and encouraged Mutua to explore her diverse musical portfolio on her YouTube channel.
