On June 27, 2024, Kenya Defence Force (KDF) soldiers continued their patrols in Nairobi amidst ongoing protests, with police deploying teargas to disperse demonstrators.
During the patrol, defiant youth surrounded KDF vehicles, chanting slogans demanding the departure of Vice President Ruto. Despite their presence, protesters emphasized their peaceful intent, cheering at the soldiers. A circulating online video captured some protesters enthusiastically accompanying the patrol vehicles.
Armoured KDF vehicles navigated through Nairobi’s key streets like Tom Mboya Street, Moi Avenue, and Kenyatta Avenue, maintaining a visible presence in the city center. Simultaneously, anti-riot police repeatedly dispersed protesters who regrouped, voicing anti-Ruto sentiments.
Earlier, Defence Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale had authorized the KDF’s deployment across Nairobi and other areas to assist in managing protests against the Finance Bill. The National Assembly subsequently endorsed the soldiers’ deployment, coinciding with their initial patrols in the capital.
Meanwhile, the Law Society of Kenya lodged a court petition challenging the legality of the soldiers’ deployment.
