Popular Kikuyu gospel musician and philanthropist Karangu Muraya found himself in the middle of a storm after he was chased away by angry residents in Murang’a County. The incident occurred shortly after Muraya was seen attending a high-profile meeting with President William Ruto and Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki, sparking outrage among locals.
The meeting, which reportedly touched on regional development and political realignments, has triggered sharp reactions from a section of Murang’a residents who feel betrayed by Karangu’s perceived alignment with the political elite. Many accused him of abandoning the common mwananchi and using his popularity to gain political mileage.
Eyewitnesses say the residents confronted Karangu when he attempted to address a public gathering in the area. Chants of “Hatukutumiwi!” (We won’t be used!) and “Tunajua unaenda State House!” (We know you’re heading to State House!) filled the air as the crowd demanded that he leave the venue immediately.
Sources close to the incident revealed that the anger was fueled by suspicions that Karangu had brokered a deal with top government officials, allegedly without consulting or informing the local community. His previous reputation as a champion for the poor seems to have taken a hit, with some locals claiming that he is now “eating with the high table” while ignoring the pressing needs of ordinary citizens.
In a brief statement shared online after the incident, Karangu denied any wrongdoing and insisted his meeting with the president and the CS was purely developmental. He urged Murang’a residents to remain calm and avoid falling prey to misinformation.
“I have always stood with my people, and I will never betray their trust,” he said.
Despite his clarification, the backlash on social media continues, with many users questioning his recent political activities. Analysts suggest that the incident highlights the growing disconnect between local influencers and the communities they claim to represent, especially when they appear to side with controversial political figures.
