John Kamau: KU Professor Who Quit Lecturing Job for Greener Pastures in the US only to End Up Working as Supermarket Attendant

A former lecturer at Kenyatta University, who left his academic position after years of teaching, is now considering returning to Kenya after securing a job that does not meet his expectations.

The professor, who identified himself as Johnstone Kamau in a text message to this writer, shared that he obtained a green card to move to the United States in 2020, with hopes of teaching at universities there. However, his aspirations were soon dashed when a friend informed him that he lacked the necessary qualifications to teach at U.S.-based universities.

Left with limited options and the need to make a living, he found himself taking on menial jobs. He started working at construction sites before eventually landing a position at a supermarket, where he claims to earn Ksh 20,000 a day.
