Jalang’o Journey: A Tale Of Ascent From Fisherhood,Comedy, Radio Presenter To MP

Phelix Odiwour, better known as Jalang’o, has scripted a compelling narrative that traces his remarkable rise from the quaint town of Makongeni in Homa Bay to the esteemed chambers of Parliament. His journey, marked by determination and resilience, encapsulates the essence of overcoming odds.

Celebrating his 40th birthday on August 27, 2023, Jalang’o reflected on his extraordinary path from humble beginnings to assuming the role of the Member of Parliament for Lang’ata in Nairobi.

Early Years Defined by Struggle and Ambitions

Hailing from Homa Bay County, Jalang’o’s childhood was shaped by persistent challenges. Growing up in a close-knit family of five, he shared his formative years with three brothers and a sister.

“We didn’t always have plenty,” he recollects, noting occasions when they returned from school to find an empty table. Nevertheless, the hardships fueled their determination.

His early education at Lake Primary School in Homa Bay reflected dedication and diligence, evident in his impressive score of 442 out of 700 marks in class 8.

Dreams Deferred and Unforeseen Twists

Despite his academic prowess, Jalang’o’s aspirations of attending Maseno School were thwarted by financial constraints. Witnessing his father’s struggles, Jalang’o’s resolve intensified. He pursued education at Bar Kanyango Secondary School, a testament to his father’s sacrifices.

The Pursuit of Education and Unveiling Destiny

After completing secondary school, Jalang’o found himself at a crossroads. The weight of unfulfilled dreams led him to Lake Victoria as a fisherman before securing a job in a fish processing company in Homa Bay.

Destiny, however, had other plans. Armed with a modest sum from his father, Jalang’o ventured to Nairobi, starting his urban life with odd jobs and an indomitable spirit.

Spotlight on Jalang’o

Jalang’o’s journey led him to Kware in Embakasi, where he began at the grassroots, learning life’s lessons in the heart of the city. His entry into acting at Jicho 4 Productions marked the beginning of a remarkable career.

His breakthrough came with “Mwisho wa Kosa,” propelling him to acclaim as the best actor. Dedication and talent earned him roles on various local TV programs, solidifying his status as a household name.

Radio Waves and Political Aspirations

Expanding beyond television, Jalang’o’s charismatic voice found a home on radio waves, making him a notable radio personality across various stations. However, the spark of political aspirations ignited within him.

Recognizing the importance of formal education, he pursued a degree in community development at Daystar University while balancing his media career, understanding that knowledge and skills were crucial for effecting real change.

From Microphone to Parliament

In December 2021, Jalang’o took a leap of faith, driven by a desire to give back to the community. His political journey, marked by dedication and support, culminated in his election as the Member of Parliament for Lang’ata in Nairobi on the ODM ticket in August 2022.

Challenges and Future Aspirations

Despite success, Jalang’o’s political journey faced challenges, with friction arising from his association with President William Ruto and the ODM party. Nevertheless, he remains committed to his constituents and envisions seeking re-election in 2027, propelled by the same spirit of service that has defined his extraordinary life.
