A man from Kuresoi North constituency, Andrew Kipsang, recently shared his story on Inooro TV, recounting events that led to his current imprisonment. Kipsang, who is serving a 10-year sentence, was found guilty of attempted arson following an incident that occurred in 2015.
According to his account, the incident began in March 2015 after he passed by an illicit alcohol den. At the time, he was struggling with alcoholism. A disagreement broke out after one of his friends took his scarf (commonly known as an Arafat), and when he tried to get it back, a confrontation ensued. Several individuals, including the alcohol vendor, allegedly joined in and assaulted him.
Later that day, overwhelmed with anger, Kipsang took a container of petrol from his home and returned to the location where the altercation had happened. He admitted to pouring the petrol into the room and igniting it, leading to a fire that injured several people. Fortunately, no lives were lost.
Kipsang was arrested and charged in court, where he faced five counts of attempted murder. He was found guilty and sentenced to five years for each count. However, the court allowed the sentences to run concurrently, meaning he will serve a total of ten years in prison.
Speaking from prison, Kipsang advised others, especially young men, to avoid crime and stay away from situations that could land them behind bars. He emphasized that life in prison is extremely difficult and not worth the risk.
