A Kenyan living in the United States has openly revealed his decision to return to Kenya, citing that his time in the US has drained him of vitality. Benson, who has achieved considerable success in America, holding lucrative jobs, acquiring properties, and building wealth, explained that he is leaving the US to escape the relentless rat race.
Although the United States offers ample opportunities to make money, Benson feels it lacks the sense of community and family life that he yearns for, qualities he believes are abundant in Kenya.
“I’ve been here since 2011, working in various fields. I served in the US Army for four years and was deployed to Afghanistan, and I’ve also worked in the corporate sector. My last job earned me $12,000 a month (about KSh 1.6 million), and I even ran my own businesses on the side,” he shared.
However, despite his financial success, Benson has come to the realization that life in America isn’t fulfilling. “I’ve realized I’m wasting my time here, and I won’t do it anymore. I’m heading back to Kenya,” he said.
For Benson, the pursuit of money has lost its appeal. “It’s not about the money. I have my investments and property here,” he admitted. “But even with all this wealth, I’m never able to enjoy it. The work culture here is relentless; it’s all about grinding from dawn until night, leaving no time for my family or children.”
Having invested in real estate in the US, Benson plans to explore property management opportunities in Kenya upon his return. He feels that his investments will support the kind of family-oriented lifestyle he’s seeking. “I’ve realized that continuing to stay in the US, stuck in this cycle of work with no personal or social life, feels like slavery. I’m done with it,” he concluded.
Benson’s bold decision has shocked many Kenyans, particularly those who frequently line up at the US embassy in Nairobi, hopeful for the chance to secure a US visa and pursue similar dreams.
