Central Organisation of Trade Unions (COTU) Secretary General Francis Atwoli has voiced his support for President William Ruto, urging him to remain focused on his leadership goals despite growing criticism from various quarters.
Speaking during the 2025 Labour Day celebrations held at Uhuru Gardens, Atwoli praised the President for maintaining strong leadership and an active national presence. The event was attended by workers, government officials, union leaders, and members of the public.
Atwoli called on Kenyans to embrace constructive dialogue and to recognize the challenges that come with leadership. “Every president faces criticism,” he said, referencing past leaders such as Jomo Kenyatta, Daniel Moi, Mwai Kibaki, and Uhuru Kenyatta, who all dealt with public opposition during their terms.
“Mr. President, don’t be intimidated. There have always been voices of dissent, but that shouldn’t stop the work of nation-building,” Atwoli remarked.
The COTU boss also highlighted development projects initiated by former presidents, noting that achievements are often overlooked due to political noise. He lauded President Ruto’s visible engagement with citizens across the country, saying it reflects a hands-on approach to governance.
Addressing concerns over criticism on digital platforms, Atwoli raised the issue of social media regulation, citing examples from countries that have implemented controls to ensure responsible use. He urged for balanced freedom of expression that does not compromise national stability.
“Patriotism means protecting our country, both offline and online,” Atwoli added, calling for the promotion of unity and peace, especially in digital spaces.
Atwoli concluded by encouraging the President to focus on service delivery, reassuring him that Kenyans would appreciate progress and development when they see it.
