In a deeply moving ceremony in Kwa-Ukungu, Kavonge, Kitui County, a father and son were buried together after succumbing to illness within days of each other. Sylvester Mwanzia Masika passed away three days before his father, John Wambua Mwanzia, and the family made the painful decision to have them rest side by side.
The pair were placed in identical coffins, each draped in white sheets, symbolizing unity even in death. A photograph showing their matching caskets being lowered into the grave captured the mournful ambiance of the occasion. It was also revealed that there was a 21‑year age difference between the two—John was born on January 1, while Sylvester’s birth year is known, though the exact date was not disclosed.
Amidst the grief, an unexpected moment occurred during the area chief’s eulogy. She had to pause her speech after announcing that the president would be visiting Kitui on Mashujaa Day, prompting spontaneous chants of “WANTAM” from the crowd.
The ceremony concluded with a heartfelt plea: “May the souls of Mwanzia and John rest in peace.”
