On Tuesday, May 22, Githunguri MP Gathoni Wamuchomba responded to remarks made by Kirinyaga Governor and Council of Governors (CoG) Chairperson Anne Waiguru regarding the ‘One Man, One Shilling, One Vote’ agenda.
In a post on her official social media accounts, Wamuchomba reaffirmed her support for the agenda championed by Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, stating it was the right path forward. “Back at home, we are speaking the language of One Man One Shilling while you are away. Prepare to either join us or step aside,” she asserted.
Wamuchomba also questioned Waiguru’s efforts as CoG chairperson to address the challenges facing Mt. Kenya residents, such as low returns on coffee produce, widespread alcoholism, and a deteriorating business climate, which has led to the closure of many enterprises in the region.
She specifically criticized Waiguru for the unmet promises to coffee farmers, asking, “Before you lecture us, please tell us as CoG chair why our coffee farmers are not receiving the cherry fund of Ksh80 per kilogram as agreed during the coffee reforms.”
Additionally, Wamuchomba raised concerns about the firing of individuals from Mt. Kenya from government positions, the incomplete infrastructure projects in the region—including the Kenol-Marua road, Mau-Mau road, and Ruiru Dam—and the overall economic stress faced by the community. “You are the Chair of the Council of Governors, sitting pretty while we struggle with rising economic stress, closing businesses, alcoholism, and the neglect of projects by the Kenya Kwanza regime, which you are now defending online,” she remarked.
Wamuchomba also commented on Waiguru’s recent trip to the US with President William Ruto, urging her to leverage her position to secure loans for implementing projects in the larger Mt. Kenya region.
Her remarks followed Waiguru’s criticism of Deputy President Gachagua for allegedly not supporting young leaders aspiring to high office. Waiguru emphasized the importance of mentoring young leaders, stating, “Everyone has a right to dream and pursue their dreams, just as those in current leadership did, with the support of millions of men and women.”
