Former Gov Mike Sonko promises to help Sammy Kioko recover KSh 19 Million from Machakos County Government

Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has pledged to intervene in assisting comedian and fashion designer Sammy Kioko recover KSh 19 million allegedly owed to him by the Machakos County Government.

Speaking on The Obinna Show Live, Sonko expressed willingness to support Kioko in resolving the payment dispute, citing his cordial relationship with the current Machakos Governor, Wavinya Ndeti.

“How much is the county owing him? Does he have proof of delivery? Send him to me because the governor and I respect each other. Let him come so that we can look for the governor and see how he can be helped. Maybe the county is broke, you never know, but even if it means paying him in instalments, I can help him,” Sonko said.

Kioko broke down in tears on the same show, describing how the delayed payment had affected him and his team. He lamented having to ask for contributions for his sister’s medical treatment while waiting for money owed by the county.

“Even if the county has no funds, they should call and say, ‘We’ll pay you this amount and deduct the rest.’ But instead, they’re accusing me of playing politics and being sponsored. Do they want a sick person to come in a wheelchair to ask for her money?” Kioko said emotionally.

Kioko claims the Machakos County Government failed to pay him for an embroidery tender completed nearly two years ago, a delay that he says forced him to close his tailoring business, lay off staff, and struggle with rent and medical bills. His protest outside the governor’s office went viral, bringing the issue into the public eye.

The Machakos County Government dismissed Kioko’s claims, stating that the allegations were unfounded and appeared to be part of a politically motivated scheme aimed at discrediting the governor.

However, Kioko shared screenshots of conversations with county officials, insisting he has receipts and proof of delivery. A tailor who assisted him, Maureen, confirmed that uniforms had been delivered to the county and revealed she is unable to afford surgery for fibroids due to the delayed payment.

The controversy has sparked online debate, with celebrities and TikTokers rallying behind Kioko and criticizing the county government for allegedly mistreating young entrepreneurs. Sonko’s intervention offers hope for resolution, as many await the county’s response and action to settle the outstanding payment.
