Eric Omondi and GenZs have launched a referendum to reduce the number of counties in Kenya from 47 to 8

Eric Omondi, a prominent figure who has been vocal in questioning the government’s misuse of resources and a key supporter of the Gen Z movement, has officially announced his intention to launch a referendum.

This decision comes after extensive consultations and agreements with both the Gen Z community and a significant number of Kenyans. Omondi is spearheading an initiative to collect 1 million signatures, a crucial step towards making the referendum a reality.

Omondi has highlighted that many Kenyans believe the country should be restructured to have only 8 counties, each with a single governor. This proposal aims to reduce costs, with the funds saved from eliminating excess gubernatorial and senatorial positions being redirected to help pay off national debts.

Additionally, the referendum seeks to abolish the Women Representative seat, as it is argued that the position lacks a clear or significant role. The campaign for the referendum has already begun, with the goal of holding it as soon as possible.
