A dairy farmer in Uasin Gishu, Mr. Jos Creemers, is making over Sh. 2.2 million from dairy farming and value addition at his Eldoret farm, Lewa Baraka. In addition to producing milk, Creemers has been making cheese and sour milk, which has increased his profits.
With 60 cows producing 1,500 litres of milk per day, Creemers earns Sh. 2,250,000 per month at a rate of Sh. 50 per litre. He uses over 400 litres of the produced milk to make cheese, which he sells as a whole wheel at a rate of between Sh800 and Sh900 per kilogramme, depending on the age of the cheese.
The cheese making machine and pasteuriser he purchased have allowed him to increase the daily processing capacity from 300 litres to 2,000 litres, which translates to 200kg of cheese.
After processing the milk, Creemers sells the remaining 600 litres at Baraka Milk Bar, which is owned by the farm, and plans to expand the cheese business to meet the high demand. Good care of his cows, preserved feeds, and commercial feeds have allowed the farm to have a constant supply of milk throughout the year, even during dry spells.
