Death toll from shooting incident at the Kenya-Ethiopia border in Moyale rises to 8

The death toll from a shooting incident at the Kenya-Ethiopia border in Moyale, Marsabit County, has risen to eight after one more victim succumbed to their injuries.

The police report indicates that only two of the ten individuals on board the lorry targeted in the attack on the night of August 12, 2024, survived. The attack occurred at Elledimtu along the Forolle-Turbi Road in Moyale. An unknown number of assailants ambushed the lorry, which was transporting food items from Nairobi to Dukana.

Regional leaders, including Marsabit Governor Mohamud Mohamed Ali, have condemned the attack. According to the governor, eight of the ten passengers were shot and their bodies were subsequently burned. One survivor sustained severe injuries, while the other, a minor, escaped unharmed.

“On behalf of the people of Marsabit, we, the leaders, strongly condemn these heinous acts. Our thoughts are with the families, friends, and relatives of the deceased,” said the governor.

The police reported that the lorry was set ablaze, destroying 80 bags of 100 kg maize, 60 iron sheets, five 200-liter barrels of diesel, three pieces of 2×4 timber, and other assorted goods. Additionally, DCI detectives recovered 157 spent 7.62 mm cartridges from the scene.

This incident follows a report of two foreigners who went missing after being kidnapped on the same night in the area. Earlier, on August 9, 2024, a similar attack occurred at Golole on the Kenya-Ethiopia border, where an Ethiopian bulldozer was burned by unknown assailants.

Regional leaders have called on the national government and the Ministry of Interior to take urgent action to combat terrorism and restore peace in the North Eastern region.
