The driver of a public service vehicle (PSV) has been arrested following a viral video showing a crew member performing dangerous stunts on a moving matatu.
According to the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA), the driver was apprehended and charged with multiple traffic offenses after members of the public raised concerns over the vehicle’s reckless operation. He was granted a Sh100,000 cash bail or a Sh300,000 bond.
“The driver was arrested, presented in court, and charged with various traffic offenses. We sincerely thank the public for reporting the incident,” NTSA stated.
The authority condemned the stunts, describing them as “reckless and extremely dangerous.” NTSA explained that the matatu was being driven in a manner that included sharp turns and sudden braking—actions that could easily throw passengers off balance or cause them to fall.
Passengers were urged to always fasten their seatbelts while in a vehicle, with NTSA emphasizing that both passengers and crew must remain seated and secured at all times.
In the viral footage, a crew member wearing a white shirt and green reflector jacket is seen dangling from the matatu’s door, performing several risky maneuvers while the vehicle moves. At one point, he balances on one leg and one hand, leaving the rest of his body suspended in midair as the vehicle makes sharp turns.
The video has sparked widespread outrage, with Kenyans calling on NTSA to crack down on reckless driving and unsafe practices on the country’s roads.
