A drunkard on stage, a born-again gospel artist in the streets. The life of Micheal Njoroge

Michael Njoroge, a gifted comedian and a passionate gospel artist, lives a life that many find intriguing. Known by his stage name “Mlevi” (Swahili for “drunkard”), Njoroge’s comedic persona is a stark contrast to his personal faith as a devoted born-again Christian. His unique journey reflects the delicate balance between art and faith, showcasing his versatility as an entertainer and minister.

Early Life and Discovery of Talent
Born and raised in Makomboki, Kigumo, Murang’a County, Michael Njoroge’s journey began humbly. He attended Gituru Primary School before moving on to Makomboki Secondary School. It was in these formative years that he discovered his knack for making people laugh. His talent shone brightly as he performed in school dramas and church skits, laying the foundation for his future career.

The Birth of “Mlevi”
Njoroge ventured into professional comedy in 2016, embracing the persona of “Mlevi.” Portraying a humorous drunkard, he captivated audiences with his sharp wit and authentic dramatization. Interestingly, his mother played a pivotal role in shaping his comedic craft, often helping him rehearse his skits. This familial support proved crucial when he auditioned for Centro Comedy, a popular Kikuyu stand-up comedy show on Inooro TV.
With guidance from the show’s director, Mr. Irush, and support from fellow comedians like Kiengei, Njomo Wa Nyathira, Kajim, and the show administrator, Kinjo, Njoroge quickly rose to fame. His appearances on Kiengei Live and Central Sinema cemented his reputation as a household name in the Kikuyu comedy scene.

The Dual Life: Comedy and Gospel
Despite the hilarity of his “Mlevi” character, Njoroge’s personal life is far from comedic. As soon as he steps off the stage, he embraces his role as a gospel artist. With five gospel songs to his name, including Ngai UniqueIhoya,Njira ya MutharabaNi Ngukwamukira and his latest release, Undu Njui, Njoroge uses music to inspire and uplift others.
Njoroge acknowledges the challenges of balancing his two personas, especially as his comedic character contrasts sharply with his gospel ministry. However, he views both as expressions of his God-given talent, channeling his creativity to reach different audiences.

The Struggles and Hopes
While Njoroge has achieved significant fame in the comedy industry over the past five years, he candidly admits that financial success has eluded him. Despite his popularity, his earnings do not reflect his name recognition. Nonetheless, he remains optimistic that his music career will open new doors and bring greater opportunities.
