A widow in Bahati Sub-County is facing the bitter consequences of sacrifice after selling her last family plot to fund her son’s entry into the police service—only for him to resign days after graduating.
Jane Muthoni, 55, sold a 1.5-acre parcel of land left by her late husband for KSh 200,000 in January 2025. The funds were intended to cover recruitment expenses for her son, David Muthoni, including medical tests, uniforms, and transport to the National Police College in Kiganjo. “That land was all we had after my husband passed in 2023,” Jane recounted from her modest iron-roofed home in Kabarak. “I wanted him to have a secure future, never imagining it would end like this.”
David, 24, completed his training on February 25 but announced just four days later that he planned to quit. The reason: a KSh 967,000 win from a multi-bet on English Premier League and Kenyan league matches. “I staked KSh 500 and woke up to see almost a million in my account,” he explained. “A police salary is KSh 45,000, but now I have options I didn’t dream of before. Why stay?”
Neighbours remember the land sale vividly. Peter Kiptoo, who witnessed the transaction, said, “She sold it out of necessity. Everyone knew it was for her son to join the police.”
The family now faces the implications of David’s decision. Recruits who resign within the first month are required to repay training costs, currently estimated at KSh 180,000—a sum David says he is prepared to cover.
The incident has sparked quiet debate in Bahati about how sudden financial windfalls can upend carefully laid family plans. Reflecting on her sacrifice, Muthoni said simply, “I sold the soil that fed us so he could wear that uniform. Now the uniform is off, and the money is already in his account.”
This story highlights the delicate balance between parental sacrifice, youthful ambition, and the unpredictable nature of opportunity. While David’s unexpected windfall offers him financial freedom, it leaves his family grappling with the emotional and practical consequences of decisions made in trust and hope.
