Presenter Stephen Mukangai: From Toilet Cleaner In  Kibera To Best Sports Journalist in Kenya

Stephen Mukangai’s rise in Kenya’s media industry is a powerful story of determination, resilience, and faith in one’s dreams. From humble beginnings to becoming a celebrated sports commentator, his journey shows how far hard work can take someone who refuses to give up.

Born in Malava, Kakamega County, Mukangai attended local schools before moving to Nairobi in 2008 to pursue better opportunities. Life in the city was harsh. With no support or stable income, he took on several odd jobs to survive. At one point, he worked as a toilet cleaner in the Kibera slums and later did heavy manual work at construction sites just to earn enough for a meal.

Despite the struggles, Mukangai held on to his dream of becoming a journalist. Determined to change his life, he walked into the Standard Media Group offices and introduced himself to Hassan Mwana wa Ali, one of Kenya’s most respected broadcasters. Though nothing materialized immediately, that bold step would later open doors for him.

His breakthrough came when Hassan eventually gave him a chance to co-host a sports show. Mukangai impressed listeners and colleagues with his unique voice, passion, and deep knowledge of local football. His defining moment arrived in 2010 during a live commentary of a match between Ulinzi Stars and Red Berets. His delivery was so outstanding that Hassan recommended him to senior editors on the spot.

From that moment, Mukangai’s career took off. He has grown into one of Kenya’s top sports journalists, known for his electric live match commentary, lively football analysis, and charismatic broadcasting style. Today, he is a respected name at Radio Maisha under the Standard Media Group.

Mukangai’s story is a reminder that greatness can emerge from the toughest beginnings. With courage, persistence, and commitment to one’s craft, even the most unlikely dreams can become reality.
