Senator John Methu Warns President Ruto Against Attending Samia Suluhu’s Inauguration

Nyandarua Senator John Methu has issued a stern warning to President William Ruto over reports that he might attend President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s inauguration in Dodoma, Tanzania. Methu cautioned that such a move would send the wrong political message both locally and internationally.

Speaking during a political gathering, Methu said, “Githinji, we are watching you closely to see if you will attend Samia Suluhu’s inauguration in Tanzania. If you attend, that means you support what she did, and like her, you are not ready to cede power when the majority of Kenyans vote you out in 2027.”

The senator accused President Ruto of allegedly sympathizing with Suluhu’s controversial leadership style, arguing that Tanzania’s political environment under her rule has faced criticism over issues of democracy, press freedom, and human rights.

Methu went on to emphasize that Kenya’s democracy is founded on strong principles of accountability and people’s sovereignty. “Don’t dare. This is Kenya, not Tanzania. The people here are a different breed,” he added, suggesting that Kenyans would not tolerate any form of authoritarian governance.

His remarks come at a time when regional leaders have been expressing mixed reactions to Suluhu’s re-election, with some hailing her leadership while others question the credibility of the electoral process.

The senator’s statement reflects the growing political tension as Kenya edges closer to the 2027 general elections, with leaders positioning themselves and sharpening their political rhetoric. Methu’s warning also highlights a broader regional concern over democratic governance and leadership succession across East Africa.
