2027 Presidential Race: Matiang’i Emerges as Surprise Contender Against Ruto, Kalonzo, Gachagua, and Maraga
As Kenya edges closer to the 2027 general election, the political temperature across the country is steadily rising.
Conversations on who should lead the nation next have shifted from speculation to serious debate, with familiar political heavyweights and unexpected names making headlines.
Among the key figures sparking national interest is former Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr. Fred Matiang’i.
Once seen as a technocrat rather than a politician, Matiang’i is now emerging as a potential presidential contender, challenging established political players including President William Ruto, former Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka, ex-Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, and former Chief Justice David Maraga.
A recent poll by K24 invited Kenyans to share their thoughts on whether they would support Matiang’i’s bid for the presidency. The responses reflect a sharply divided public mood.
Supporters of Matiang’i argue that he represents a new style of leadership—firm, disciplined, and focused on results.
They point to his legacy in the Education and Interior ministries, where he was widely credited for implementing bold reforms.
For many voters, especially those disillusioned by traditional political theatrics, Matiang’i represents competence over empty promises.
“He worked, not for the cameras, but for the people,” one voter commented on social media. “Matiang’i is what Kenya needs now.”
However, Matiang’i faces significant challenges. While his administrative record is solid, his political machinery remains unclear.
Questions linger about whether he has the grassroots networks or national alliances required to mount a credible presidential campaign.
Additionally, some Kenyans still remember the controversial crackdowns during his tenure, particularly related to security operations, which may resurface during campaigns.
Elsewhere in the race, Kalonzo Musyoka continues to project himself as the elder statesman ready to take the mantle, banking on his long experience in Kenyan politics.
Rigathi Gachagua, recently distanced from Ruto, is also believed to be crafting a political comeback of his own.
Perhaps the biggest wildcard is retired Chief Justice David Maraga, whose entrance into active politics has surprised many.
His supporters believe his judicial background could offer a different approach to governance.
As for President Ruto, he will be seeking a second term amid a mixed record of achievements and controversies, setting the stage for a fierce contest.
With alliances shifting and public sentiments evolving, the 2027 race promises to be one of the most unpredictable in Kenya’s recent history.
