A thoughtful moment unfolded in Kirinyaga shortly after a church service ended, when a group of MCAs, led by County Assembly Speaker Muremi, presented a goat and an envelope as a token of appreciation to Bishop Joseph Wainaina for his spiritual leadership.
However, Bishop Wainaina respectfully declined the gift, urging the leaders to instead donate it to people in genuine need.
The bishop emphasized that true success lies in impacting lives positively, not in receiving gifts or public recognition.
MCAs Agree to Bishop’s Wish
Although momentarily surprised, the MCAs took the bishop’s words with humility. One of them responded by saying, “This is what we want—to take it to those children, and may your blessing follow it.”
Bishop Advocates for Service to the Community
Bishop Wainaina encouraged the lawmakers to donate the items to children with hearing disabilities, stressing that they deserve greater support. He reminded the leaders that true service means uplifting the very people who entrusted them with leadership roles.
Plans were quickly made to visit a local school for the deaf and deliver the donations as advised.
Church Leaders Taking a Stand
The event reflects a growing sentiment among religious leaders in Kenya who are becoming more cautious about accepting donations from politicians during public church events. Such gestures are often seen as attempts to gain favor or influence within sacred spaces.
By redirecting the gift to the children, Bishop Wainaina underscored the importance of focusing on service rather than symbolism in leadership.
