Amid the rising cost of living and growing unemployment, many individuals are struggling to secure stable employment. Yet, Nisha Jepkoech stands out as a remarkable example of determination and ingenuity. After completing her secondary education, Nisha chose a different path—one of entrepreneurship.
Nisha, like many young people, initially considered moving to Eldoret or Nairobi in search of better opportunities. However, after hearing the stories of friends who still faced significant challenges despite relocating to larger towns, she decided to stay in her hometown, Nandi Hills. It was here that she saw an opportunity to create something of her own. Inspired by the success of local chapati vendors, she chose to start her own chapati business.
Starting with only a small bag of wheat flour, Nisha began her venture. Over time, her efforts grew, and she was able to produce a bundle of chapatis every day. As her business gained momentum, she expanded her menu to include tea and chips, boosting her daily sales to Ksh5,500.
At just 23 years old, Nisha has already proven that hard work and independence can go a long way. For the past two years, her business has not only supported her financially but also allowed her to live independently. As she told Kenya News Agency, “Just like any other young lady, I have a lot of needs, which is why I work hard to earn a living rather than depend on my parents. With this business, I provide for all the personal things a lady requires, pay my Ksh5,000 rent, and put food on the table.”
Beyond her personal success, Nisha is also committed to empowering others. She has hired two women to help manage her kiosk, paying them Ksh300 per day. In return, these employees gain valuable skills in chapati-making—skills Nisha herself learned from her mother.
Nisha’s workday begins early, with the smell of freshly made chapatis filling the air by 6 a.m. She caters to a wide range of customers, including boda boda riders, office workers, students, and businesspeople, until 10 p.m. Her hard work and commitment to her craft continue to inspire others.
Looking to the future, Nisha has dreams of expanding her business and eventually owning a restaurant. She encourages young people to explore entrepreneurship as a path to success. Whether it’s selling household items, cereals, or roasted maize, Nisha believes that opportunities are abundant for those willing to put in the effort, regardless of their skill level.
