Over a hundred families found themselves compelled to evacuate their residences, with 13 homes ravaged by severe floods during the night of Monday in Ngurubani, located in Mwea, Kirinyaga County.
MCA Peter Karinga of Tebere ward verified the distressing incident, revealing that these families sought shelter at a nearby private school. The flooding ensued as a consequence of the overflowing of river Thiba following incessant downpours.
“I’ve provided them with provisions for now, but I’m uncertain about tomorrow. Assistance is urgently needed as there’s a looming threat of disease outbreaks,” expressed Karinga.
The deluge, which commenced on Monday evening, inflicted substantial financial losses upon residents and traders situated at Maisha Kamili, Mwea rice mill, and adjacent areas near Wanguru stadium.
“This recurring issue is a direct result of inadequate drainage systems, not just confined to Maisha Kamili but also plaguing various parts of Ngurubani town. It’s imperative for both the Kirinyaga County and national governments to address this pressing concern,” emphasized David Maina, a trader in Ngurubani town.
Accounts from Ngurubani residents lamented the sweeping inundation of their homes, resulting in the loss of numerous household possessions. Additionally, Kirinyaga Central witnessed about 13 families rendered homeless due to the destruction of their dwellings, particularly in the Kanyekiine ward, as highlighted by Kirinyaga Central Member of Parliament, Gachoki Gitari.
In response to the crisis, Martin Kagunda, the Kirinyaga County Red Cross coordinator, urged residents to relocate to safer environs without delay.
