Wild Celebrations in Kericho as Senate Rejects Impeachment Bid Against Governor Eric Mutai — Second Time Around

Late into the night on August 29, 2025, Kericho residents flooded the streets in spirited celebration after the Senate dismissed the second impeachment attempt against Governor Eric Mutai. The motion failed, with 26 senators voting against it, 16 in favour, and one abstention. Senate Speaker Amason Kingi declared the motion nullified, stating that the required two‑thirds majority was not met.

Supporters rejoiced, dancing and chanting Mutai’s name, praising the Senate for respecting their democratic will. Many described the outcome as a vindication of the people’s choice and condemned the impeachment motion as politically motivated. One resident proclaimed:

“We thank God for this victory… The will of the people must be respected… We thank the Senate for upholding the will of the people.”

Another urged Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) to shift their focus back to development rather than political wrangles.

Governor Mutai’s legal team had earlier challenged the process, arguing that the impeachment vote was invalid due to electronic voting irregularities. They claimed that 18 MCAs did not participate in the vote, making it fall short of constitutional requirements.

The charges against Mutai included allegations of gross constitutional violations, abuse of office, gross misconduct, and mismanagement of public funds—specifically, KSh 85.7 million in fictitious payments and KSh 351 million under the National Agricultural Value Chain Development Project. Other accusations involved nepotism, irregular hiring, and orchestrating land invasions in Kericho town.

This marks the second time in less than a year that Governor Mutai has survived an impeachment attempt. The previous effort, in October 2024, was also dismissed due to technicalities.
