Who Owns Magunas Supermarkets, Nokras Hotel, kilele Mall ; The Rise Of Simon Wachira

Being a hawker is never an easy job. Their typical day begins very early in the morning. They walk around with their goods, braving the cold, scorching heat, and sometimes even heavy rains.

The most challenging part of the job is convincing potential customers to buy the products. Without sales, all the hard work, perseverance, and determination could be in vain.

This was the life of multi-millionaire Simon Wachira before he found success through his business ventures. He is living proof that our past does not define our future.

Humble Beginnings

Simon Wachira began his journey as a hawker and is now the proud owner of the retail chain Magunas Supermarket. Through hard work and determination, he was able to turn his dreams into reality.

Born in Kiburu village, located between Kirinyaga and Nyeri counties, Wachira later relocated to Murang’a. In the 1980s, he worked as a hawker in the Mukuyu market. Despite his meager earnings, he managed to save diligently. With these savings and a loan, he opened a small grocery shop.

Wachira didn’t stop there. His ambition grew, and he eventually established Maguna Andu Wholesalers, which later led to the birth of Magunas Supermarket.

Business Expansion

Today, Magunas Supermarket operates in more than five counties across Kenya. Wachira’s retail chain competes with major players such as Quickmart and Naivas, making him one of the wealthiest individuals from the Mt. Kenya region.

The first Maguna outlet was launched in the Kwa Maji area (now known as Magunas Stage). Over time, he expanded to Nyeri, Meru, Kitui, and Nairobi. His Nairobi branches are strategically located in areas such as Kahawa Wendani (along Thika Road) and Utawala.

In 2016, he opened the Kitui branch, effectively ending Naivas Supermarket’s monopoly in the region. This move showcased his keen eye for identifying market gaps and capitalizing on them.

Venturing Into Hospitality

Murang’a County boasts numerous inland tourist attractions, but its hospitality industry was underdeveloped. Spotting an opportunity, Wachira established Nokras Riverine Hotel to cater to tourists visiting the area.

Situated on the banks of the River Sagana—famous for its water sports—the hotel offers over 60 rooms and 29 uniquely themed cottages named Simba, Twiga, Kifaru, Kiboko, and River Sight.

Guests enjoy amenities such as private swimming pools, lounges, kids’ play areas, and high-speed internet in all rooms to enhance comfort and convenience.

Giving Back to the Community

Simon Wachira is also known for his philanthropic efforts. During the COVID-19 pandemic, he donated a truckload of food to a Catholic church in Murang’a to support the needy.

He is a devout member of St. Joseph The Worker Mumbi Catholic Church. According to fellow congregants, Wachira rarely misses a service unless he is out of town.

“Unless he is away, he never misses church. He is a humble man who actively participates in both church and community activities,” said James Mwangi, a member of the church.
